Paul Lees to entrepreneurs: you need luck, good team work, but you need to be able to make-up your own mind

“There is a lot of luck, you need a team, listen to advice but don’t always follow it.” Paul Lees, founder and one time CEO of Powwownow, the leading free conference call company, and judge at the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards, has been talking to Fresh Business Thinking.

Topic “Who moved my granola differences in digital marketing from Powwownow (2008) to Thortful (2016)”

In the 2000’s ‘Who moved my cheese’ was a popular change management book. This talk looks back to the early Powwownow marketing efforts and compares that time with the current startup – Thortful. What has changed (more channels, more social) and what has not (PPC still delivers motivated buyers).

Keynote talk at West Kent B2B 2016

Happy to be talking at West Kent B2B event 2pm 10 March 2016.

The general topic will be ‘Powwownow building a £33m company – from startup to sale.’

The brief from the organiser was ‘speaking about how you started and grew your business it is such an achievement would be really interesting. What you learnt along the way, possibly what you would do different and tips of your success to pass on to other businesses.’

This is quite a big topic for a 20 minute talk so I thought the most relevant bits of the journey for the West Kent B2B audience will be the growth stage – digital marketing and building a brand.

For the start up element I will talk through the decisions we took last year in the creation of Thortful (a new greeting card startup – this is more relevant than the startup landscape in 2003/4 when Powwownow got going.

I look forward to speaking at the event
